In recognition of Aged Care Employee Day on 7 August 2025, Cumberland City Council is highlighting the valuable contributions of the Seniors & Disability Services team and the success of their Seniors Club Cumberland project. Through their dedication to improving the well-being and quality of life for Cumberland’s seniors, the team has helped build a vibrant and connected community.
In January 2025, Cumberland City was among eight councils across New South Wales to receive funding through the NSW Government’s Connecting Seniors Grant Program 2025. With the $30,000 grant, the Council launched the Seniors Club Cumberland project, a series of free community programs aimed at reducing social isolation and encouraging meaningful connections among seniors in Cumberland.
Since its launch in March 2025, Seniors Club Cumberland has already achieved notable success, with 100 participants actively involved across four locations within the Local Government Area. Each group meets on a designated day each month, fulfilling its aims to connect seniors, reduce isolation, and build lasting social bonds. A final celebration event in December 2025 will bring all participants together to acknowledge the program’s achievements and the friendships formed throughout the year.
Cumberland Mayor Ola Hamed conveyed her pride in the outstanding contributions made by the Seniors & Disability Services team, whose dedication continues to uplift the community.
“Our Seniors & Disability Services team plays an essential role in fostering a sense of belonging and support within our community. The success of the Seniors Club Cumberland project is a testament to their unwavering dedication to improving the lives of our seniors. As a Council, we are proud to witness the powerful impact these programs have in reducing isolation, building connections, and empowering our older residents to live their best life. This Aged Care Employee Day, we celebrate their tireless efforts and the incredible difference they make every day,” said Mayor Hamed.
In addition to the Seniors Club Cumberland project, Seniors & Disability Services offers a comprehensive range of services designed to assist seniors and people with disabilities in living independent, fulfilling lives. These initiatives include:
- A range of events as part of Seniors Festival, including bus trips, a golf day, a picnic in the park, and various informative sessions.
- A series of free Self Defence for Seniors workshops designed to enhance personal safety and confidence among older residents.
- NAIDOC Week activities, such as damper making, basket weaving, and a Tribal Warrior Cruise, celebrating Indigenous culture and history.
- Four bus trips, including visits to the Fairfield Museum, providing seniors with the opportunity to explore local history.
- A Carers Week event featuring an evening of Arabian drumming and a dinner, highlighting the importance of carers in the community.
- Home delivered meals, over 55’s exercise programs, Wellness Programs, social outings, and shopping services all year round.
