Valerie Thomas, 83, from St Stephen’s Village in Penrith, was crowned the winner of Anglicare Sydney’s Great Scone Bakeoff. In a delicious twist, she was also the inaugural winner of the best jam competition.
Now in its seventh year, the competition had residents bake a dozen scones or a jar of jam at home before bringing them along to be judged.
Valerie says the secret to a perfect scone is to keep trying. She worked on different recipes for more than a month, testing them on a friend on Sunday mornings, before deciding on the winning one.
Among the other entrants was 101-year-old resident Marie Arnott, who is related to the great Arnotts biscuit family.
