In honour of the brave men and women who served overseas during World War I (1914-1918), Australia Post has designed two commemorative stamps for Anzac Day titled ‘Postcards from the Front’.
Letters and postcards written during the First World War were crucial links between loved ones and the thousands of Australians who served overseas. Many of these items of correspondence later became treasured keepsakes.
‘Postcards from the Front’ complements the Anzac Day 2022 issue, ‘Postcards to the Front’. It comprises two stamps:
- The Glory of Anzac – $1.50
- This postcard, featuring an Australian coat of arms, national flag, wattle blossom, map of Australia, and kangaroo, is typical of those sent home by Australian soldiers.
- Souvenir from France – $2.85
- For reasons of military security, soldiers were often prohibited from stating exactly where they were located when writing home from the trenches. Many soldiers on the Western Front headed their letters and postcards as being from ‘Somewhere in France’ or ‘Somewhere in Belgium’.
The stamp issue is now on sale at participating post offices and online at auspost.com.au/stamps.
